Baton Rouge receives Honorable Mention in USTA's 2009 Best Tennis Town Contest

Michael McNulty, III, Executive Vice-President of USTA Southern presented Baton Rouge with a 2009 Best Tennis Town Honorable Mention plaque. The Greater Baton Rouge Community Tennis Association (GBRCTA) and The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) jointly submitted the nomination. The presentation took place on September 17 at the BREC Administration Building.

The city was also selected as one of 10 finalists in the national contest which awarded the city $2,000 for tennis equipment. The USTA asked cities around America if their city has what it takes to be the Best Tennis Town. Baton Rouge was one of 56 communities who submitted a video highlighting their community's passion and spirit for tennis. Letters of recommendation were submitted by local Baton Rouge businesses, Community members and Baton Rouge's Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden.

Kyle Ferachi, President of the GBRCTA, upon receiving the award stated, "The GBRCTA worked hand and hand with BREC to produce a video that captured the spirit of tennis in Baton Rouge. We highlighted professionals, collegiate, adults, wheelchair and junior tennis. Being selected as one of the top 10 tennis towns in the United States is an amazing honor and recognizes the true passion of tennis players and fans in Baton Rouge. This is one Top 10 list of which Baton Rouge can be proud."
